Safely Power Washing Your Wood Deck

Preparing Your Deck for Cleaning
A wood deck is a significant investment for any Lake County home, but the humid summers and harsh winters in Northeast Ohio can lead to a buildup of algae, mold, and grime. Before you start the machine, clear the area of all furniture, planters, and decor. Sweep away loose leaves and debris to ensure the water stream can reach the wood surface directly. It is also wise to cover nearby delicate plants with plastic sheeting to protect them from high-pressure spray and cleaning agents.
Choose the Right Pressure Settings
The most common mistake homeowners make is using too much pressure. Wood is a soft material, and high PSI settings can easily gouge the surface, splinter the grain, or leave permanent lap marks. For most softwoods like cedar or pressure-treated pine, you should keep your pressure washer between 500 and 1,200 PSI. Always start with the lowest setting and test a small, inconspicuous area, such as a corner or a stair tread, to ensure the force is effective but not destructive.
Use the Correct Nozzle and Technique
The nozzle tip determines the concentration of the water stream. Never use a zero-degree (red) tip, as it acts like a laser and will damage the wood instantly. Instead, use a 25-degree (green) or 40-degree (white) fan tip. When washing, maintain a consistent distance of about 12 to 18 inches from the surface. Move the wand in long, sweeping motions following the grain of the wood. Overlap each pass slightly to prevent streaks, and keep the wand moving at all times to avoid concentrated pressure in one spot.
Allow for Proper Drying and Sealing
Once the washing is complete, the wood will be porous and vulnerable. It is critical to let the deck dry completely before applying any stain or sealer. In Lake County's climate, this usually takes at least 48 hours of dry weather. Rushing this step can trap moisture inside the wood, leading to premature rot or peeling finishes. Inspect the deck once dry; if the power washing raised the wood grain and left a fuzzy texture, a light sanding may be required before you apply a protective coating.
