Flooring Installation in Lake County, OH
Worn carpet, cracked tile, or a floor that has simply seen better days can drag down an entire room. A new floor changes how a space looks and feels, and the right material can stand up to everyday traffic, spills and moisture for years to come.
Lake County Handymen installs tile and luxury vinyl plank floors with careful attention to the subfloor, the layout and the finished edges. Whether you’re updating a bathroom, laundry room, kitchen or basement, Jeff Vojtko personally quotes and carries out the work throughout Willoughby, Mentor, and Lake County.
Flooring We Install
- Ceramic and porcelain tile floors
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring
- Removal and haul-away of old flooring
- Subfloor repair and leveling
- Baseboard, shoe molding and transition strips
What’s Involved in Installing a Tile Floor
1. Remove the Old Floor
The existing flooring, and often the toilet or appliances, are removed so the work starts from the subfloor. Baseboards are pulled where needed.
2. Prepare a Solid, Flat Base
Tile is rigid, so any flex or dip in the floor can lead to cracked tiles or grout. Jeff checks the subfloor, repairs damaged areas, and installs a cement backer board or underlayment membrane to give the tile a stable base.
3. Plan the Layout
The layout is dry-fit and marked out before any tile is set, so the pattern runs straight, the cuts at the walls are balanced, and small slivers are avoided at doorways.
4. Set the Tile
Each tile is set in thinset mortar, with spacers or leveling clips to keep grout lines even and edges flush. Cuts are made around door casings, vents and plumbing.
5. Grout, Clean and Finish
Once the thinset cures, the joints are grouted and the surface is cleaned with a sponge. Fixtures are reinstalled, and baseboards, trim and transitions are added to finish the room.
What’s Involved in Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring
1. Remove and Inspect
Old carpet, pad or flooring is removed and the subfloor is checked for damage, moisture and high or low spots.
2. Level the Subfloor
Vinyl plank needs a flat surface to click together tightly and avoid gaps. Low areas are filled and high spots are sanded down, and an underlayment is installed if the product calls for one.
3. Acclimate and Lay Out
The planks are allowed to adjust to the room, then the rows are planned so the seams are staggered and the last row isn’t a thin strip.
4. Install the Planks
Planks are clicked together row by row, leaving a small expansion gap at the walls. Door casings are undercut so the flooring slides neatly underneath.
5. Trim and Transitions
Baseboards or shoe molding cover the expansion gap, and transition strips create a clean edge where the new floor meets another surface.
Recent Project: Tile Laundry Room Floor
Porcelain tile installed in an offset pattern.
The photo above shows a laundry room floor with large-format gray tile set in an offset layout, before baseboards were reinstalled. Keeping the grout lines straight and the edges flush gives a small room a clean, finished look.
Every floor is different. Room size, material, subfloor condition and finishing all affect the scope, so your project receives its own free estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you install both tile and vinyl plank floors?
Yes. Jeff installs ceramic and porcelain tile as well as luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring, and can talk through which option suits the room.
Which is better for a bathroom or laundry room, tile or vinyl plank?
Both handle moisture well. Tile is very durable and long-lasting; vinyl plank is warmer underfoot, quicker to install and generally lower in cost. The right choice depends on the room, your budget and the look you want.
Can you install new flooring over my old floor?
Sometimes. Vinyl plank can often go over a flat, sound existing floor. Tile needs a solid, stable base, so old flooring is usually removed. Jeff checks the existing floor before recommending an approach.
How much does flooring installation cost?
The estimate depends on the room size, the flooring you choose, the condition of the subfloor, removal of the old floor, and trim or transition work. There is no single flat price. Contact Jeff for a free estimate.
How long before I can walk on a new tile floor?
Tile needs time for the thinset and grout to cure, so foot traffic is limited for a period after installation. Vinyl plank can usually be walked on as soon as it is installed. Jeff will explain the timing for your project.
Who will quote and install my floor?
Jeff Vojtko owns and operates Lake County Handymen and personally quotes, schedules, and does the work. The business has been operating since 2023 and is fully insured.
