Preparing Your Home for Better Airflow

When we arrive at a home in Mentor or Willoughby for a QuietCool installation, the first step is always preparation. For our recent project with Chris—installing a QC CL-4700—we began by identifying the ideal central location for the intake. Before any tools are started, we protect your flooring and furniture with drop cloths. Because this process involves working between the living space and the attic, keeping your home clean is our top priority.

Our team then heads into the attic to ensure the mounting location is clear of electrical wiring, plumbing, or structural obstructions. We also verify that your attic has sufficient net free venting area to allow the exhausted air to escape efficiently, which is critical for the system's performance.

The Precision Ceiling Cut and Damper Box

Once the attic is prepped, we move to the ceiling cut. Using specialized tools and a template, we create a precise opening for the QuietCool intake grille. In Chris's case, we ensured the cut was perfectly square and positioned between the existing ceiling joists to maintain structural integrity.

Following the cut, we install the airtight damper box. This component is what separates your living space from the attic. The dampers are designed to seal shut when the fan is not in use, preventing heat loss during our cold Lake County winters and keeping attic dust out of your home.

Suspending the Fan and Connecting Ductwork

Unlike traditional whole house fans that bolt directly to the ceiling joists—creating loud vibrations—the QuietCool system is a luxury centrifugal fan suspended from the roof rafters. We use heavy-duty straps to hang the fan motor high in the attic space.

We then connect the acoustic ducting between the fan motor and the ceiling damper box. This specialized ductwork is the secret to the system's whisper-quiet operation. By decoupling the motor from the ceiling and using insulated ducting, the sound of the fan is dampened significantly before it ever reaches your ears.

Electrical Setup and Final Cleanup

With the hardware in place, we handle the electrical configuration. For most Lake County homeowners, this involves installing an electronic timer or a smart controller on the wall. This allows you to set the fan to run for a specific duration, such as two hours in the evening to flush out the day's heat and pull in the cool Lake Erie breeze.

After the system is tested and we verify the airflow, we perform a thorough cleanup. We remove all debris from the attic and the living area, vacuum the workspaces, and install the aesthetic white ceiling grille.
